What is a Cochlear implant ?
The cochlear implant is a medical device, which provides hearing sensation for people who have a severe to profound sensori-neural hearing loss. it is designed to bypass the damaged parts of the inner ear and send electrical stimulation directly to the auditory nerve which is then interpreted as sound by the brain.
The cochlear implant is a miracle for persons with severe to profound sensori-neural hearing loss,who receive little or no benefit from hearing aids.

Who can benefit?
Adults and children who meet the following criteria :
Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears.
Prelingual 12 months of age for best outcome in speech and language development.
Receive little or no useful benefit from hearing aids.
No medical contraindications.
High motivation and appropriate expectations.
Postlinguistic severe to profound sensorineural or prelinguistic profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears.
Receive limited or no benefit from hearing aids.
No medical contraindications.
A desire to be part of the hearing world.
How does the implant work?
Highly sensitive microphone picks up sounds.
Processor digitizes sound into coded signals.
Codes are processed into electrical signals.
Electrode stimulates hearing nerve fibres, recognized by the brain as sound.
